In-Depth Information
10am-2am;
Oranienburger Tor)
'To eat is a necessity, but to eat intelligently is an art.' This quote by 17th-century French au-
thor François de La Rochefoucauld is the motto of this teensy exotic takeaway with attached
gallery. One bite of Dada's freshly prepared felafel doused with a tangy homemade sauce
and you too will understand why there's always a queue of local loyalists, despite often per-
functory service.
MODERN GERMAN
LOKAL
€14-22; noon-4pm & 6-10pm; Rosenthaler Platz, Oranienburger Strasse)
If you think the stark and basic interior (white walls, wooden tables, white candles) is a bit
ho-hum, perhaps the inspired, fresh and colourful takes on German fare will make you a fan
of Lokal after all. Mellow at lunch, things get trendier at dinner time, when reservations are
a must.
ITALIAN
HARTWEIZEN
€11-23; 6-11.30pm; Rosenthaler Platz)
With its simple wooden tables and panorama windows Hartweizen is hipster haven, thank-
fully with plenty of substance on the southern-Italian-leaning menu. The most creativity
goes into appetisers such as caramelised goat cheese or salmon tartare with orange slices
and kohlrabi, but fish and meat are also first rate, the pasta homemade and the wine fairly
priced.
INTERNATIONAL
KATZ ORANGE
6-11pm; Rosenthaler Platz, M8)
With its gourmet organic farm-to-table menu, feel-good country styling and swift and smil-
ing servers, the 'Orange Cat' hits a gastro grand slam. It will have you purring for Duroc
pork that's been slow-roasted for 12 hours, giving extra-rich flavour. The setting in a castle-
like former brewery is stunning, especially in summer when the patio opens.
GERMAN
WEINBAR RUTZ
