STUMBLING UPON HISTORY
If you lower your gaze, you'll see them everywhere, but especially in the Scheunenvier-
tel: small brass paving stones engraved with names and placed in front of house en-
trances. Called Stolpersteine(stumbling blocks), they are part of a nationwide project
by Berlin-born artist Gunter Demnig and are essentially mini-memorials honouring
the people (usually Jews) who lived in the respective house before being killed by the
Nazis.

Berlin's smartest museum cafe is a great spot for discussing the latest exhibit over sumptu-
ous breakfast, gooey homemade cakes or star-chef Sarah's famous veal schnitzel and in-
spired seasonal mains.
The high-ceilinged hall (the former train station waiting room) gets texture from a long
bar, patterned stone floor, dimmed lights and various conversation corners. In good weather,
tables spill onto the canalside terrace.

A platinum card is a handy accessory at this 'look-at-me' temple where A-listers, power
politicians, pouty models and 'trust-afarians' can be seen slurping oysters and tucking into
their aged organic prime cuts.
For an extra €24, you can get a lobster with your steak. Riverside tables beckon in fine
weather.
