In-Depth Information
Trains first rolled through the Hamburger Bahnhof in 1874, but after only 32 years the
station had become too small and was turned into a traffic museum. After WWII, the build-
ing stood empty until the late Josef Paul Kleihues was hired in 1989 to create an exhibition
space. He kept the elegant exterior, which at night is bathed in the light of a Dan Flavin in-
stallation. The interior, though, was gutted and turned into modern minimalist galleries that
orbit the central hall with its exposed iron girders.
