At the heart of the park, engulfed by traffic, the imposing 3 Siegessäule (Victory
Column) commemorates Prussian military triumphs enforced by Iron Chancellor Otto
von Bismarck. Nearby, the colossal 4 Biismarck D
ck Dennkmaal, a monument to the man,
shows him flanked by statues of Atlas (with the world on his back), Siegfried (wielding
a sword) and Germania (stomping a panther).
Following Spreeweg north takes you past the oval 5 Buunddespräsidiala
idialamt, the of-
fices of the German president, to his residence in 6 Schloss Bellevue , a former royal
palace. Follow the path along the Spree, then turn left into the 7 Englis
r Garten
(English Garden) created in the '50s in commemoration of the 1948 Berlin Airlift. At
its heart, overlooking a pretty pond, the thatched-roof 8 Teehaus im Englischen
Garten hosts free summer concerts in its beer garden. Afterwards, check out the
latest exhibit at the nearby 9 Akademie der Künste , on the edge of the Hansaviertel,
a modernist quarter borne from a 1957 international building exhibition.
Walk south back through the park, crossing Altonaer Strasse and Strasse des 17
Juni, to arrive at the Neuer See with a Café am Neuen See at its south end. Stroll
north along the Landwehrkanal via the b Gasla

slaternenmuuseuum, an open-air collection
of 90 historic gas lanterns, and wrap up your tour at Tiergarten S-Bahn station.
