The Gemäldegalerie ranks among the world's finest and most comprehensive collections of
European art from the 13th to the 18th centuries. Its opening in a custom-built Kulturforum
space in 1998 marked the happy reunion of a collection separated by the Cold War for half a
century. Some works had remained at the Bodemuseum in East Berlin, the rest went on dis-
play in the West Berlin suburb of Dahlem. Today, about 1500 works span the arc of artistic
vision over five centuries. Dutch and Flemish painters, including Rembrandt, are especially
well represented, as are exponents of the Italian Renaissance. Another focus is on German
artists from the late Middle Ages, and there's also a sprinkling of British, French and Span-
ish masters. Expect to feast your eyes on masterpieces by Titian, Goya, Botticelli, Holbein,
Gainsborough, Canaletto, Hals, Rubens, Vermeer and other heavy hitters.
