In-Depth Information
A must for fans of quirky museums, this nonprofit collection in a former supermarket is en-
tirely dedicated to letters of the alphabet. There's the 'U' from the U-Bahn station Frankfur-
ter Tor, an 'E' from the filming of Inglorious Basterds and an 'R' from the factory of light-
bulb maker Osram.

EYE-POPPING VIEWS ON A BUDGET
Heading up the TV Tower may give you bragging rights for having been atop Ger-
many's tallest building, but those wonderful vistas come at a price. Here are a couple
of nearby alternatives that will leave less of a dent in your wallet.
Park Inn Panorama Terrasse ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 030-238 90; Alexanderplatz 7; admis-
sion €3; 3-10pm Mon-Thu, noon-10pm Fri-Sun, weather permitting) At 150m above ground, the
Panorama Terrasse atop the Park Inn Hotel on Alexanderplatz may put you 53m lower
than the viewing platform of the TV Tower, but it does give you splendid views not only
of the surrounds but of the photogenic tower itself. Relax with a cold drink while
draped into a sun lounger or marvel at gutsy baseflyers leaping off the edge of the
building (Friday to Sunday only). Attached to a special winch rappel system usually
used by stunt performers, these daredevils plunge towards the ground in a controlled
fall, reaching near free-fall speeds.
House of Weekend On a hot summer night, the absolute high point for party people
is the rooftop garden of the rejuvenated former Weekend club atop the GDR-era Haus
des Reisens (House of Travel). Aside from picture-postcard views, there's a glamorous
crowd, delicious barbecue and cool drinks. After 11pm, the action moves down to the
15th floor for some quality dancing until the wee hours.

Pompous yet majestic, the Italian Renaissance-style former royal court church (1905) does
triple duty as house of worship, museum and concert hall. Inside it's gilt to the hilt and out-
fitted with a lavish marble-and-onyx altar, a 7269-pipe Sauer organ and elaborate royal sar-
cophagi. Climb up the 267 steps to the gallery for glorious city views.
