Once the home of Veitel Heine Ephraim - court jeweller and coin minter to Frederick the
Great - this pretty, pint-size 1766 town palace hosts exhibits focusing on aspects of Berlin's
artistic and cultural legacy.
The original building was levelled in 1935 during the construction of the Mühlendamm
bridge. Only the curved rococo facade with its gilded ironwork balconies and sculptural or-
namentation was saved and stored in what later became West Berlin. In 1984, it was re-
turned to East Berlin and incorporated in the Palais' reconstruction. Inside, architectural
highlights include the oval staircase and the Schlüterdecke, an ornate ceiling on the 1st
floor.

This private rococo home features a series of painstakingly restored period rooms that im-
part a sense of how the well-to-do lived, dressed and spent their days during the Biedermei-
er.
The structure once belonged to the prominent Knoblauch family, which included politi-
cians, architects and patrons of the arts who enjoyed tea and talk with Schinkel, Schadow
and other luminaries of the day.

Like no other artist of his time, Heinrich Zille (1859-1929) managed to capture the hard-
ships of working-class life in the Industrial Age with empathy and humour. This small
private museum in the Nikolaiviertel preserves his legacy with a selection of drawings, pho-
tographs and graphic art. There's also an interesting video on his life (in German only).
Afterwards, you can channel Zille's ghost over a beer at the nearby Zum Nussbaum (
MAP GOOGLE MAP ) pub, his rather authentically re-created favourite watering hole.
