FOUNTAIN
NEPTUNBRUNNEN
This elaborate fountain was designed by Reinhold Begas in 1891 and depicts Neptune hold-
ing court over a quartet of buxom beauties symbolising the rivers Rhine, Elbe, Oder and
Vistula. Kids get a kick out of the water-squirting turtle, seal, crocodile and snake.

The hulking Rotes Rathaus is the office of Berlin's Senate and governing mayor. The struc-
ture blends Italian Renaissance elements with northern German brick architecture and is
framed by a terracotta frieze that illustrates milestones in Berlin history until 1871.
The moniker 'red', by the way, was inspired by the colour of its bricks and not (necessar-
ily) the political leanings of its occupants.

Sharks dart, moray eels lurk and spider crabs scuttle in this rambling aquarium; other crowd
favourites include smile-inducing sea horses, ethereal jellyfish and Ophira the Octopus. Vis-
its conclude with a slow lift ride through the
Aquadom
, a 25m-high cylindrical tropical fish
tank (get a free preview in the lobby of the Radisson Blu Hotel). Check the website for on-

All in all, some 1500 creatures representing 97 species inhabit dozens of tanks and an in-
teractive rock pool that allows close encounters with starfish and crabs. All labelling is in
English and German.
