No matter where you are in Berlin, simply look up and chances are that you will see the
Fernsehturm (TV Tower). Germany's tallest structure, which is as iconic to the city as the
Eiffel Tower is to Paris, has been soaring 368m high (including the antenna) since 1969.
Views are stunning on clear days from the panorama platform at 203m. Pinpoint city land-
marks from there or from the upstairs Restaurant Sphere (mains €14 to €28), which makes
one revolution per hour.
Ordered by East German government leader Walter Ulbricht in the 1950s, the tower was
built not only as a transmitter for radio and TV programs but also as a demonstration of the
GDR's strength and technological prowess. However, it ended up becoming a bit of a laugh-
