Berlin's 'Louvre'
The first repository to open was the Altes Museum (Old Museum), completed in 1830 next
to the Berlin Cathedral and the Lustgarten park. Today it presents Greek, Etruscan and Ro-
man antiquities. Behind it, the Neues Museum (New Museum) showcases the Egyptian col-
lection, most famously the bust of Queen Nefertiti, and also houses the Museum of Pre- and
Early History. The temple-like Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery) trains the focus
on 19th-century European art. The island's top draw is the Pergamonmuseum , with its mo-
numental architecture from ancient worlds, including the namesake Pergamonaltar. The Bo-
demuseum , at the island's northern tip, is famous for its medieval sculptures.
Museumsinsel Masterplan
In 1999 the Museumsinsel repositories collectively became a Unesco World Heritage site.
The distinction was at least partly achieved because of a master plan for the renovation and
modernisation of the complex, which is expected to be completed in 2025 under the aegis of
British architect David Chipperfield. Except for the Pergamon, whose exhibits are currently
