Since the 2013/14 season, new artistic director Shermin Langhoff has made the smallest of
Berlin's four state-funded theatres the dedicated home of the so-called 'post-migrant theatre'.
Productions look at the lives of second- and third-generation Germans and examine such is-
sues as integration, identity, transition and discrimination. All performances have English
surtitles.

The gifted students at Berlin's top-rated music academy populate several orchestras, a choir
and a big band, which collectively stage as many as 400 performances annually, most of
them in the
Neuer Marstall
on Schlossplatz, where the Prussian royals once kept their
coaches and horses. Many concerts are free or low-cost.
SHOPPING
There are some souvenir shops along Unter den Linden and around Check-
point Charlie, but for fancy fashion and accessories, make a beeline to
Friedrichstrasse with its dazzling Friedrichstadtpassagen and Galeries Lafay-
ette.

It's easy to lose track of time in this cultural playground with wall-to-wall books, DVDs and
CDs, leaving no genre unaccounted for. Bonus points for the free reading-glass rentals,
downstairs cafe and performance space used for concerts, political discussions and high-
profile book readings and signings.
