TOPOGRAPHIE DES TERRORS
In the same spot where once stood the most feared institutions of Nazi Germany (in-
cluding the Gestapo headquarters and the SS central command), this compelling ex-
hibit dissects the anatomy of the Nazi state. By chronicling the stages of terror and
persecution, it puts a face on the perpetrators and details the impact these brutal in-
stitutions had on all of Europe. From their desks, top Nazi commanders like Himmler
and Heydrich hatched Holocaust plans and organised the systematic persecution of
political opponents, many of whom suffered torture and death in the Gestapo prison.
From spring to autumn, another exhibit called 'Berlin 1933-1945: Between Propa-
ganda & Terror' opens in a trench against glassed-in foundations of the Gestapo pris-
on cells. It zeroes in on the role of Berlin during the Third Reich and how life changed
for local residents after the city had become the nexus of the Nazi leadership's politic-
al power. To complement the exhibits,a self-guided tour of the historic grounds takes
you past 15 information stations with photos, documents and 3D graphics as well as a
200m stretch of the Berlin Wall along Niederkirchner Strasse.
