The Deutscher Dom (German Dome; MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 030-2273 0431; Gendarmen-
markt 1; 10am-6pm Tue-Sun May-Sep, to 6pm Oct-Apr; Französische Strasse, Stadtmitte) wasn't
much of a looker until it was topped by Gontard's dazzling galleried dome in 1785. Built
between 1702 and 1708 for German-speaking congregants, it is now home to a recently up-
dated, interactive exhibit charting Germany's path to parliamentary democracy. English au-
dioguides and tours are available.
One of Karl Friedrich Schinkel's finest buildings, the Konzerthaus rose from the ashes of
Carl Gotthard Langhans' Schauspielhaus (National Theatre). Schinkel kept the surviving
walls and columns and added a grand staircase leading to a raised columned portico. The
building is fronted by an elaborate sculpture of 18th-century poet and playwright Friedrich
Schiller. For an inside look at this beacon of Berlin high-brow culture, catch a concert or
take a guided tour (€3; in German) at 1pm on Saturdays.
