It's been burned, bombed, rebuilt, buttressed by the Berlin Wall, wrapped in fabric and fi-
nally turned into the modern home of the German parliament: the Reichstag is one of Ber-
lin's most iconic buildings. Its most eye-catching feature is the glistening glass dome, which
draws more than three million visitors each year. The grand old structure was designed by
Paul Wallot and completed in 1894 when Germany was still a constitutional monarchy
known as the Deutsches Reich (German Empire), hence the building's name.
Home of the Bundestag
Today, the Reichstag is the historic anchor of the new federal government quarter built after
reunification. The Bundestag, Germany's parliament, has hammered out its policies here
since moving from the former German capital of Bonn to Berlin in 1999. The parliament's
