BEER GARDENS, BEACH & ROOFTOP BARS
Berliners are sun cravers and as soon as the first rays spray their way into spring, outdoor
tables show up faster than you can pour a pint of beer. The most traditional places for out-
door chilling are of course the beer gardens with long wooden benches set up beneath leafy
old chestnuts and with cold beer and bratwurst on the menu. In 2002, Berlin also jumped on
the 'sandwagon' with the opening of its first beach bar, Strandbar Mitte, in a prime location
on the Spree River. Many that followed have since been displaced by development, which
has partly fuelled the latest trend: rooftop bars. Some of the best are in hotels (eg Amano ,
Hotel de Rome , 25hours ) but also on the top decks of shopping malls ( Deck 5 ,
Klunkerkranich ) and office buildings ( House of Weekend ) .
Outdoor boozing grounds tend to open from May to October, weather permitting.
ETIQUETTE
Table service is common, and you shouldn't order at the bar unless you intend to hang out
there or there's a sign saying Selbstbedienung (self-service). It's customary to keep a tab in-
