Taking this further
So, we have just finished learning about GameMaker essentials. How can we take this fur-
ther and continue to learn and develop our skills?
The first and best way to learn more is to go over the topic again and experiment with
everything. Experimentation is the base of learning what can and cannot be done. For ex-
ample, we could go back to Chapter 7 , Making a Game , and change aspects of the game we
created or even add more features to it.
The next step is research. While this topic has covered the essential skills that should be en-
acted when using GameMaker, there is still much more that can be done. If you don't know
how to do something, just search online and someone may very well have asked and solved
the problem before. Learn from other people's mistakes and other people's questions.
Look to the official GameMaker Community for thousands of questions and answers on
both simple and advanced topics. Feel free to write your own questions and post about your
games in the correct subforums also. It's a good idea to become an active part of the com-
munity as this allows you to collect contacts, which can help you as you learn.

The final tip is patience. When making games, you will constantly run into problems and
roadblocks, especially as a beginner. It's important to have patience; most problems can be
overcome with a bit of research and persistence.
