ternately, take the train to Krems, go upriver, and return to Vienna from Melk by

November to March, steamers depart Krems at 1015 and 1545. Note that trains to/
from Krems terminate in the Vienna Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof station.
We recommend taking the 0600 train to Melk, the point from which the cruise
down the Danube begins. It will bring you to Melk in time for unhurried connections
with the ship, but Melk itself is steeped in history and warrants your visit. The earli-
er train will permit you to wander about Melk's ancient streets, guarded by the
watchtowers of its town wall, and to visit Melk's Benedictine Abbey, the epitome
of Baroque architecture in Austria. To book a guided tour of the abbey: Tel: (02752)
555 0; Fax: (02752) 555 249; E-mail: tours@stiftmelk.at; www.stiftmelk.at .
Have lunch and sample the fine regional wines in one of Melk's charming Heuri-
gen taverns before you walk or taxi to the DDSG pier, known locally as “Schiff Sta-
tion.” Check with the information desk on the pier for boarding instructions.
