zone filled with small specialty shops. When you tire of bargain hunting, retreat to
the city rose garden in Doblhoff Park to watch chess played on a larger-than-life
chessboard.
Another interesting pastime is visiting the informal wine taverns scattered
throughout the town. Since the Middle Ages, every citizen of Baden has had the
right to sell self-produced wine, as well as meat and sausage specialties. These
“taverns” are identified by a pole decorated with fir twigs, or you can seek them
out by following the tavern signs displayed throughout the town. Visitors engaged
in “researching” taverns might do well to come to Baden as early as possible and
leave only when they have discovered the best vintage—or spend the night in
Baden, depending upon how much research they conducted.
