Passport Information
www.travel.state.gov
You can apply for a passport (in person if you are age 14 or older and do not meet
the requirements to renew a previous passport by mail) at more than 8,000 facil-
ities in the United States, including many post offices; federal, state, and probate
courts; some libraries; and some municipal and county offices. Passport forms are
also available for downloading from the Internet at www.travel.state.gov . You can
enter your zip code to determine which passport application facility is closest.
Apply several months in advance if possible. It usually takes a minimum of six
weeks. The National Passport Information Center (NPIC) operates an automated
information number: (877) 487-2778. A recorded message describes the docu-
ments you need and the application process for obtaining a passport, as well as
reporting the loss or theft of your passport.
Passport fees normally total $165 for a new passport and $140 for renewal or
for those younger than age 16. For expedited service, send an extra $60 and
pay for overnight delivery. This usually gets your passport to you in about two
weeks. Or you can use one of the express passport services online, such as
www.americanpassport.com or www.passportexpress.com . Be prepared to pay at
least triple the normal passport fees, but they will get your passport to you in only
one day after receiving the required documents.
If you are traveling within the next 14 days, or if you require a passport to obtain
foreign visas within the next four weeks, you will need to make an appointment at a
passport regional office. You may access the automated appointment system and
general automated information (24 hours a day, seven days a week). Telephone
(877) 487-2778 to make an appointment at a regional office or to talk to a cus-
tomer service representative (normally available between 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Monday- Friday; hours may be expanded during heavy calling periods). There is
no charge to make an appointment. The regional offices' addresses follow.
