Check with the clerk in the store to see if the phone that you are thinking of buy-
ing will work throughout your itinerary. Buying prepaid phones in Europe is relat-
ively inexpensive, with the phone being very inexpensive and additional minutes
available for a small cost. You are probably best off not using this phone for in-
ternational calls, unless you have read the fine-print regarding international rates
associated with the phone and/or SIM card. There are other choices for a mobile
phone, with several companies providing rental European phones, which can be
shipped to you before you depart. Prices start around $50 for a week-long rental,
not including airtime.
Depending on how long you will be gone, and how much you need to see loved
ones back home, an Internet cafe and video conferencing may be the way to go.

and most reliable one. If you use the service computer-to-computer only, it is only
necessary to set up an account for free. Some Internet cafes will have Skype soft-
ware and a webcam preinstalled on their computers, and your loved one(s) will
need the same equipment on their computer back home. If you are planning on us-
ing Skype extensively, an inexpensive headset with a microphone may be an eas-
ily packable purchase to give some privacy and protect you from distractions. Of
course, this assumes that you need to talk to your loved ones while you are gone.
If you just need to check in, a few emails from internet cafes may be perfectly suf-
ficient!
