International Calling
The following chart provides the country codes and city codes you will need when
calling from one country to another. The country codes should be used when dial-
ing to that country from another country. In most cases you will also need to dial a
city or area code prior to the local number.
Calling Europe from North America:
To use these codes from within North America, dial 011 + country code, city code,
and the local number you wish to reach. If the European city code is prefaced with
a “0,” omit it when dialing from North America.
Communicating on the Go
If you have an AT&T or T-Mobile mobile phone in the U.S., check with your carrier
to see if your phone can be used internationally. Often, your carrier will provide you
with an “unlock” code (possibly for a fee) so that your phone can be used with a
SIM (Subscriber Identification Module) Card from another carrier. This could allow
you to buy a SIM, or a prepaid SIM, from the local carrier in the country or countries
to which you travel. Verizon and Sprint phones, which use a separate technology,
rarely work abroad. (Those that might are often labeled as “world phones.”) Some
prepay phones that you can buy will work across European borders, particularly
if you remain within a few countries. We would recommend buying a prepaid cell
phone or SIM card directly from the mobile company, or from a reputable shop.
