Author's suggestion: The port cities of Brindisi and Patras are interesting, charm-
ing, and steeped in history. Why not take a day to see them at a leisurely pace?
Plan to arrive a day before your scheduled ferry departure. Ask your hotel to call
ahead for a reservation. Also ask the concierge to check on your ferry reservation.
The address and telephone numbers of the city tourist information offices are pos-
ted in the Arrival Halls of the rail stations.
Finland-Sweden and Vice Versa
There are two competing ferry services between Helsinki and Stockholm: Tallink-
Silja Line and Viking Line. Holders of Eurail passes, Eurail Select Pass (provided
that Finland and Sweden were chosen as two of the three bordering countries),
and Eurail Scandinavia Pass are valid for deck passage. Pass holders must pay
extra for cabin space.
Crossing between Sweden and Finland, you may select between two routes:
Stockholm-Helsinki direct; or Stockholm-Turku, with train connections or the
Tallink-Silja Line express bus service between Turku and Helsinki. Our preference
is the direct route between the two capitals because it gives you a few more hours
aboard ship to enjoy the scenery, which is spectacular. Both routes traverse the
breathtaking archipelago between the two countries.
Although your rail pass entitles you to travel on the ferry, you also need to obtain
a boarding pass before embarking. If you need a boarding pass, you should be at
the ferry terminal two hours before ship departure.
Tallink-Silja Line ferries depart daily from Helsinki Olympiaterminaali (Olympia
Terminal) at Eteläsatama port at 1700 and arrive Stockholm Värtahamnen port at
0955 the next day. Tram 3B and 3T service, adjacent to the Olympia Terminal, con-
nects with Helsinki city center. Shuttle bus service (extra charge) is available from
Stockholm Värtan Terminal at Värtahamnen port to Ropsten Metro (underground/
subway) station, where there are trains to Stockholm Central Station.
