Brindisi, Italy, Ferry Terminal: A 15-minute walk downhill to the Seno di Levante
pier at the foot of Corso (Umberto), Corso Garibaldi, and Via del Mera, the streets
leading to the waterfront. The terminal is on the right, just before the pier. It opens
daily two hours prior to departure times.
Attenzione (That's “attention” in Italian): From the time you arrive in Brindisi until
you are safely aboard the ferry, beware of “entrepreneurs” approaching you with
offers to help. Many are garbed in official-looking uniforms or are wearing “official
Guide” headgear. They bear alarming messages such as, “I have bad news. All of
the deck space for tonight's sailing has been sold out.” Then they relate the good
news: “You are fortunate in meeting me, for I can take you to an agency where a
few cabins are still available.” With that, he'll reach for your baggage unless, by
now, you have interrupted his presentation with a firm, “No, thank you.” If he in-
sists, polizia (police) is another good word to inject into the conversation.
Patras, Greece, Ferry Terminal: To reach the terminal from the railway station,
turn left as you exit the station. Walk along the street side of the quay approxim-
ately 300 yards, to the office marked Central Agency. Summer hours are 0900 to
