In-Depth Information
on most major rail lines, the passenger coaches are loaded directly onto the ferry.
In either case, the ferries are equipped with amenities such as restaurants, bars,
boutiques, and, when traveling between countries, money exchanges and tax-free
shops.
Three major international ferry crossings exist; they are between Italy and
Greece, Finland and Sweden, and Ireland and France. The distances are consid-
erable and usually involve overnight travel. (Sleeping accommodations are extra.)
Other ferry crossings of international importance to rail pass travelers include the
lines between Ireland and Britain.
Italy-Greece and Vice Versa
If your rail pass is valid in Greece, you are granted free deck passage between
Ancona or Bari, Italy, and Patras or Igoumenitsa, Greece, by Superfast Ferries.
Rail pass holders are also granted free deck passage between Brindisi, Italy, and
Corfu, Igoumenitsa, and Patras on ferries operated by Hellenic Mediterranean
Lines and Blue Star Ferries.
You must present your rail pass to the shipping-company office in the port and
have a ticket and a boarding pass issued before boarding. Reservation fees, port
taxes, meals, reclining chairs, or sleeping accommodations are not included. Re-
clining chairs are a great bargain for the budget-minded traveler. During July and
August there is a high-season surcharge of $20 (U.S.).
