Base Cities
Copenhagen:
Jovial, entertaining, the fun capital of Scandinavia. Save it for the
grand finale.
Helsinki:
Daughter of the Baltic. A glittering gem set in a picture-book harbor. Make
the best of your “shore leave” by enjoying every moment.
Oslo:
Friendly, pleasant, and compact. Take the Bergen-Flåm excursion option if
time permits.
Stockholm:
Striking harbor skyline, a city of islands and waterways. Sightseeing
must include a visit to Old Town, where it all began centuries ago.
Gateways
All the base cities have direct U.S. air service, even Helsinki. The circular nature of
the tour's itinerary makes it possible to select any one of the aforementioned base
cities as both the inbound and outbound gateway. Our choice would be Copenha-
gen; which is yours?
Base-City Hotels
Copenhagen:
Palace Hotel gets the tourists' nod for convenient location, midrange
rates, and so on. The Plaza, facing the station, is great but difficult to book in high
season.
Helsinki:
No listing because we recommend using the Tallink-Silja Line's accom-
modations for this tour's out-and-back day excursion, but we can recommend the
Presidenti
if you elect to extend your stay in Helsinki.
Oslo:
The Grand Hotel features Old World elegance with modern convenien-
ces—with the exception of price. The Hotel Nobel, with a wider rate range, is near
the Grand Hotel.
Stockholm:
Take your pick. All three hotels listed face Central Station. Price is
probably the deciding factor. All have acceptable restaurants and are clean and
well managed.
