Arriving by Air
Ankara Esenboga Airport, Ankara's
modern
Esenboga
Airport
( www.esenbogaairport.com ) is approximately 18 miles north of the city.
Airport-City Links: The two best options between Esenboga and the city center
are a taxi or a shuttle bus run by Havas. The buses leave for the city center 25
minutes after flights arrive.
Money exchange, ATMs, and tourist information are available in the Interna-
tional Arrivals area.
Getting Around in Ankara
Once settled in the city center, the best way to navigate around town is by taxi. Al-
though there is a bus system, there are no maps, which makes choosing the appro-
priate bus nearly impossible. Taxis are relatively inexpensive, run on a clear meter
system, and the cab drivers are well informed about local tourist attractions and ma-
jor hotels.
Sights/Attractions/Tours
Ankara is Istanbul's significantly sleepier little sister. Although the city boasts a rich
history steeped in Hittite and Roman lore, it was named the capital of the Turkish
Republic in 1923. Since that time, it has become known as a largely government
city, without significant cultural draw. That said, Ataturk's Mausoleum (Anitkabir) and
a number of museums make this capital a worthy stop.
