facilities in town. The tourist office can provide full details. The structures housing
the pumps that bring the brine to the surface from the deep wells bear a striking re-
semblance to the original oil fields of western Pennsylvania, where oil refining first
began in North America.
There is an unusual inside-outside saltwater swimming pool that you should see.
You can reach it on foot by walking along the Rhine in an upstream direction. The
brine-well structures may be seen nearby.
River steamers ply between Rheinfelden and Basel. Returning to Bern via Basel
and a boat trip on the Rhine becomes an attractive option between May and
September, when the service is in operation. Schedules are posted at the Schif-
flande (boat landing) opposite the island. Information on the steamer service to
Basel, as well as cruises on the Rhine, is also available in the Rheinfelden tourist
information office. Rhine steamers, unlike the lake steamers, do not accept rail
passes, but the rates to Basel are nominal.
