For a sobering experience, follow up lunch with a visit to The Dying Lion of Lu-
cerne. One of the world's most famous monuments, it was hewn from natural rock
in commemoration of the heroic, fatal defense by Swiss guards of Louis XVI at the
Tuileries in Paris at the beginning of the French Revolution in 1792. Mark Twain
described the Lion of Lucerne as “the saddest and most poignant piece of rock in
the world.”
Next door, you will find Lucerne's Glacier Garden Museum, which contains
remnants of Lucerne's prehistoric past that were discovered in 1872. Twenty milli-
on years ago, Lucerne was a subtropical palm beach on the ocean; 20,000 years
ago, Lucerne was covered by more than a mile of glacial ice. Don't miss it.
