patron saints. The bridge was destroyed by fire in 1993, but the bridge and the art-

The Swiss Museum of Transport and Communications is the largest and
most modern museum in Europe—also one of the most visited. Hours: April-
November: 1000-1800 daily, closes at 1700 remainder of the year. Visit
www.verkehrshaus.ch . The museum is reached easily from the center of Lucerne
by bus No. 6 or 8, which departs from the rail station every 6 minutes for the
10-minute trip, or by lake steamer to the Lido dock (variety of Eurail and Swiss
passes accepted).
Its special attraction is the Longines Planetarium at Sternenplatz 3, and the
museum also vividly traces the development of Swiss transportation, including rail,
road, aeronautical, and water navigation. Kids from 7 to 77 will be fascinated by
the operating scale model of the Gotthard tunnel railroad, and everyone will end
up breathless following a visit to the museum's spectacular Swissorama and IMAX
Filmtheater.
If you don't mind mixing fondue with frivolity, by all means eat at the Stadtkeller
Restaurant at Sternenplatz 3, just 2 blocks north of the Kapellbrücke's right-bank
entrance. It is “touristy,” but if you like yodeling, alphorn blowing, cowbell ringing,
beer drinking, and flag throwing, this is the place. At lunchtime, be there no later
than 1130. It's a tour-bus lunch stop and fills up rapidly. Tel: (041) 410 47 33 for
reservations. Visit www.stadtkeller.ch ; E-mail: info@stadtkeller.ch. You can watch
those poor, tired bus passengers try to determine what country they are seeing
today.
