The Swiss Card is valid for one free round-trip plus 50 percent discount for ad-
ditional trips (except for some mountain railroads that offer 25 percent discount)
within a one-month validity period. First class is $327; second class, $231. Children
younger than age 16 travel free with parent. Children age 6 to 15 not accompanied
by parent: half adult fare. Children younger than age 6 travel free.
The Swiss Transfer Ticket is great for skiers or for those who will stay in only
one place. It provides for one round-trip ticket by rail between any Swiss airport or
border town and any single destination in Switzerland. First class: $258; second
class: $162. Children younger than age 16 can travel round-trip free when accom-
panied by at least one parent. Children age 6 to 15 not accompanied by a parent:
half adult fare. Children younger than age 6 travel free.
Some of Switzerland's most scenic railroads (descriptions follow) accept Eurail
passes; most private railroads, however, do not, although some offer discounts
(aforementioned). Reservations are mandatory and cost extra. Remember to take
along your passport for border crossings.
Some of Switzerland's most scenic routes by train include:
Bernina Express —Chur-St. Moritz-Bernina Pass-Poschiavo-Tirano. Runs
daily in the summer and only to and from Tirano in the winter. Trip is 2½ hours

Centovalli Railway —Narrow-gauge railway connects Locarno with Domodos-
sola (Italy). Runs all year. Scenic trip is 1½ hours. Visit www.centovalli.ch .
Glacier Express —Zermatt-Brig-Andermatt-Chur-Davos/St. Moritz. Journey
runs daily in summer and winter. Trip is 7½ hours and passes through 91 tun-
nels and over 291 bridges. Eurail passes valid only between Davos/St. Moritz
and Disentis. You must purchase an additional point-to-point ticket for the por-
