SJAB(SwedishRailways) operates about 7,000 miles of rail lines. SJ's X 2000
high-speed trains cruise at up to 125 mph (200 km/h) and serve most of the ma-
jor cities in Sweden. In Business First Class, meals are served at travelers' seats.
There is also a bistro car that serves sandwiches and hot and cold dishes, as well
as some alcoholic beverages.
Linx AB (Ltd.) is an Inter-Scandinavian joint venture between SJ and NSB
(Norwegian Railways). The new Linx trains (replacing X 2000 trains) link
Oslo-Gothenburg with the Malmö/Copenhagen region (Øresund) and have im-
proved travel time and comfort on the Oslo-Stockholm route. The combined rail
and motorway connection via the 16-kilometer Øresund Bridge began in 2000. This
major infrastructure brought the cities of Malmö, Sweden, and Copenhagen, Den-
mark, together to create the largest northern European market.
The Linx trains offer ergonomically correct seats, radio and music channels (ear
plugs can be purchased), power outlets for laptops and mobile units, and even
wireless Internet access. In Business Class, meals are served at travelers' seats;
in Standard Class, you can buy cold or warm foods in the Linx Deli.
Sweden's overnight trains are among the best in Europe. The Nordpilen
(“Northern Arrow”), which runs between Göteborg and Östersund/Storlien, even
has a movie-and-Bistro carriage. Two films are shown each evening, as well as
a free short film for the kids. The Stockholm-Östersund route also has a Bistro
carriage. SJ offers four types of sleeping facilities: private compartment with two
beds, shower, and toilet; shared two-berth compartment with shower and toi-
let in the corridor; shared three-berth with shower and toilet in the corridor; and
shared six-berth couchette carriage with toilet and sink in the hallway. Night trains
travel the following domestic and international routes: Göteborg-Östersund/St-
orlien-Göteborg; Malmö-Stockholm-Malmö; Malmö-Berlin-Malmö ( www.berlin-
night-express.com ) ; and Stockholm-Östersund/Storlien-Stockholm.
