In-Depth Information
Other sights in Avila include the cathedral, which forms a part of the great wall,
thus giving it the distinctive look of a fortress rather than a church. Its somewhat
austere exterior is in contrast to its interior, which has many beautiful details. In the
cathedral's museum, you may view a portrait painted by El Greco and a colossal
silver monstrance, weighing nearly 200 pounds, made by Juan de Arfe in 1571.
The cathedral was begun in the 12th century in Romanesque style and finished
in the 15th century with a facade of Gothic Towers, the Palacio de Polention, the
Mansion de los Deanes, Mansion de Davila—all magnificent with art and architec-
ture.
The cuisine of this area is fit for a king's palate. Trout from the Tormes River is
renowned for its distinctive flavor; the roast suckling pig, lamb, or veal dishes are
equally excellent and served with a hearty complement of vegetables, followed by
yemas de Santa Teresa , small sweets made of egg yolks.
