In-Depth Information
The Costa Brava is a breathtaking, 90-mile stretch of rugged coastline blessed
with fantastic beaches and hidden coves. And it all begins at Blanes. Blanes is best
described as a typical Spanish coastal village, where fishing is still the primary in-
dustry. Blanes curves around the Mediterranean much like Cannes on the French
Riviera, but it is not a “resort” in the usual, more commercialized sense. As with
most Spanish fishing villages, the pace is slow and the people friendly.
The rail station serving Blanes is perched on a hill about a half mile from the
center of the village and the sea. Buses marked ESTAGION-BLANES will take you into
town to the bus terminal at Plaça de Catalunya, near the sea.

A stroll along the beach is delightful. It is fronted by fishermen's houses and dot-
ted with boats lying at anchor in the curve of the bay. There is an auction of the
day's catch each weekday evening at about 1700 at the breakwater. Blanes has
plenty of fun-in-the-sun beaches, too.
Other diversions include Marimurta Jardi Botanie, a delightful botanical garden
located near the breakwater where the fish auctions are held. Founded in 1924
by Karl Faust, the garden exhibits more than 4,000 species of regional and inter-
national flora. Hours: November-January: 1000-1700 daily; February, March, and
October: 0900-1800 daily; April, May, and September: 0900-1900; June-August:
0900-2000.
From Blanes, other ports along this rugged and beautiful coast can be accessed
by local buses, cars, or cruise boats. The Crucerus Line, which identifies its ves-
sels with a blue whale at each bow, operates June through September. Boats sail
north from Blanes to call at such places as Lloret de Mar, famous for its new ho-
tels and exciting nightlife; Tossa; and San Feliu de Guixols. Obtain details and
schedules from the tourist office.
