Day Excursions from Barcelona
For a unique spiritual and cultural experience, take the metro from Plaça España
to the Montserrat cable-car stop and board the cable car or funicular train up to the
stunning Benedictine Montserrat Monastery ( www.abadiamontserrat.net ) . Foun-
ded in the 11th century, it houses some 80 monks, who still live, work, and pray
there. Montserrat, about 60 kilometers north of Barcelona, is also the home of the
world's oldest boys' choir.
Other day excursions in this edition will take you to Blanes, also north of Bar-
celona, along the Costa Brava (Wild Coast), providing the breathtaking beauty of
the Mediterranean coast and an opportunity to sample culinary delights from the
sea. The citadel city of Lleida, stormed by Caesar's legions and conquered by the
Moors, carries visitors far back into Spanish history. South of Barcelona along the
beaches of Spain's Coasta Dorada (Gold Coast), picturesque Sitges attracts sun
worshipers, gourmets, and wine connoisseurs alike. Farther south, the ancient city
of Tarragona 's first-century Roman ruins stir the imagination.
