Lisbon (Lisboa), Portugal's largest city, is the capital and primary gateway for vis-
itors from North America. It's also the center of the country's rail network and the
major industrial and commercial area.
Built on the terraced sides of the hills overlooking the harbor, languid Lisbon is an
excellent gateway to the Iberian Peninsula and a good base for rail travel throughout
Portugal.
Arriving by Air
Lisbon International Airport (Portela), 5 miles north of Lisbon. Tel: 21 841 3500;

Airport-City Links: Metro (Red Line) to city center and Oriente Station runs
every 5 to 10 minutes 0745-2015. Fare: €4.00, valid one day on all buses, trams,
and city elevators (€6.00 for 2 way valid for 24 hrs). City bus lines 22, 44, 45, 83,
208, 705, and 745 are operated by CARRIS. Fare: €1.40. Express Estoril-Cas-
cais bus operates hourly. Fare: €8.00.
Taxi fare from the airport to the city center (journey time: 15 to 20 minutes) aver-
ages about €20 to €30, depending on your destination and how much luggage
you have. Taxis are metered; a tip is appreciated. “Taxi Voucher,” a system of
prepaid travel vouchers for the number of zones covered by the journey, may be
purchased in the Arrivals Terminal ( Tel: 21 845 0660).

Arriving by Train
Lisbon has four stations and a ferryboat terminal and is the main gateway to other
cities in Portugal. Santa Apolonia Station is Lisbon's international link and the
western terminus of most European rail traffic. However, you can also arrive in Lis-
bon at the “Terreiro do Paço" south railway station, with the train departing from Vila
