The RoyalRoute follows the original southward route out of Old Town. The route
now connects a series of historic sites around Warsaw and the southern suburbs.
It starts down Krakowskie Przedmiescie, one of the central avenues of Warsaw. It
passes a series of churches and palaces, including the Presidential Palace, and
runs by the campus of the University of Warsaw. There are impressive examples
of architecture as you walk the route. Pick up a map of the route from the tourist
office, but realize the complete route finishes about 7 miles from Old Town, and
consider stopping after visiting the Museum of Hunting and Horsemanship, or hop
on a bus from there to the Palace of Wilanów, which is almost 5 miles farther.
With most of the city sitting on the river Vistula, a riverboat can provide a unique
perspective on much of the city, including Old Town and the newly constructed Na-
tional Stadium. The trip takes about 2 hours, with departures at 1100, 1300, and
1500. The riverboat operates only May-August, with weekend departures only in
May and June. Boats depart from the Podzamcze dock, near Old Town on the west
side of the Vistula.
