Getting Around in Warsaw
The Warsaw Card is the recommended way to see all of the sights around the
city. Most museums around the city grant free admission to the holder, and many
galleries, hotels and shops offer a discount of between five and twenty percent. A
72-hour card is available for 159 zł. The card includes a map and booklet of the city
indicating everywhere that accepts the card, which is available for purchase from
the Tourist Information Centers.
Warsaw has a good public transport system that allows for efficient travel around
the city. It uses a combination of trams, buses, light rail, and a single subway
(Metro) line. Trams and buses are included for the 24-hour validation period on the
card. If you choose not to purchase the card, single fare tickets range from 4.40 zł
for a single fare to 15.00 zł for a travelcard good for a 24-hour travel period. Tickets
are available from ticket vending machines, post offices, or from drivers, although
they are able to refuse the sale if it will delay the departure, or you do not have
exact change.
Sights/Attractions/Tours
Warsaw's most famous son continues to be the composer Fryderyk Chopin. Born
in 1810, he moved with his family to Warsaw before he was a year old. It was in
Warsaw that he was educated, recognized as a prodigy, and performed his first
concerts. An excellent audio walking tour is available from the Tourist Office. You
are guided along a series of 15 spots, each with a connection to the composer.
Outside each location is a bench that plays a selection of Chopin's music. Other
multimedia features are available at the benches if you have a smart phone with a
data connection, although be sure of your data rates before using!
Stops along the tour include the Chopin Family Drawing Room, in the Czapski
Palace. The Chopin family lived in the building as Fryderyk was becoming famous,
and a portion of the family's residence has been refurbished to appear as it did
when he was composing and practicing in the building. Open Tuesday-Sunday
