On September 17, 1976, en route to Hamar for the first time, we wrote, “This train
passes through some of God's most beautiful countryside along one of His most
beautiful lakes.” That has not changed.
The countryside is the rich farmland of Hedemarken, and the lake is Norway's
largest, Lake Mjosa. The lake is 75 miles long, and every foot of it is beautiful.
For a special treat cruise Lake Mjosa on the oldest operating paddle steamer
in the world, the Skibladner , built in 1856. Ask the tourist office for excursion
timetables and fares. For information in advance E-mail: skibladner@online.no;
www.skibladner.no .
Hamar is situated on the eastern side of Lake Mjosa at its widest point. The train
from Oslo traverses the river Vorma from Eidsvoll to Mirucsund, and then contin-
ues along the eastern shore of Lake Mjosa to Hamar. Watch for the bridge that the
train crosses about 1 hour and 10 minutes out of Oslo. Station yourself on the right
side of the coach for a spectacular view down the lake from the vantage point of
the bridge as the train crosses.
It seems that you have hardly settled in your seat when the train glides to a stop
in Hamar. Time will pass even more quickly here, for there is much to see and do
in this most pleasant city. Two of its feature attractions are the Hedmark Museum
and the Norwegian State Railways Museum. These are not stuffy old buildings
crowded with relics. Both are spacious, outdoor areas with fascinating displays of
what rural and railroad life was like in Norway's earlier times. Check with the tour-
ist office regarding transportation to the museums. Both can be reached by public
