Arriving by Train
Oslo has several suburban rail stations, but all international trains stop only at the
Oslo Sentralstasjon (Oslo Central Station). You will see the station name fre-
quently abbreviated as “Oslo S,” or shortened to “Oslo Sentral.”
Within the station, rail travelers can take advantage of a mini-market area amid
a variety of kiosks selling everything from apples to zircons. The nostalgic market
area stands on what was once known as the East Station. The East Station was
devoted to steel rails, nail-spiked wooden platforms, and tiles bearing the patina
of wear from countless passengers' feet as they hurried to and from the steam-
hauled trains.
Oslo Sentral Station is a model of efficiency. Access from the train platforms to
the station's main hall is by ramps. A shopping mall, Byporten (“City Gate”), is con-
nected to Oslo Sentral and has more than 65 shops, 10 restaurants, and a hotel.
Baggage carts are available for a NOK 10 coin. The coin is refunded if you re-
turn your cart to a rack when you are finished. Although the carts may be used
on the ramps, they cannot be used on the station's escalators. You can,
however, use the large passenger elevators located at either end of the main
hall when moving from one level to another. The elevators are marked HEIS ,
which comes close to the word hoist in English. Follow the pictographs, and you
will find every service you might need.
Baggage storage lockers are located on a balcony to the right of the station's
main exit. The locker area is open 0700 to 2300 daily.
Money exchange facilities are located on the mezzanine level of the station,
directly across from the ticket windows. Follow the currency exchange picto-
graphs. Hours: June-September: 0700-1800 Monday-Friday, 0900-1500
Saturday. When the money exchange is closed, you can change money in the
post office or at the tourist information office in Oslo opposite the City Hall.
Ticket offices are on the left-hand side of the station. Domestic tickets are
available 0600 to 2315 Monday through Saturday and 1000 to 1800 Sunday.
The international ticket office is located next to the domestic ticket windows
(open daily 0630 to 2200).
Tourist information office is open 0700-2000 Monday-Friday, 0800-1800
Saturday and Sunday (until 2000 during the summer) and is located next to the
money exchange office. It provides tourist information covering Oslo, hotel re-
servations, guesthouse and private accommodations, sales of the Oslo Pass,
and sightseeing tours. To request information/accommodations in advance,
