Ever since its harbor slowly silted in the 18th century, the city of Hoorn has taken
to relaxing—except on Wednesday from July to August, when it awakens with col-
orful markets and fun events.
In stalls grouped around the statue of Admiral Jan Pieterszoon Coen (founder
of the East India Company) in the square the town calls Rode Steen, Hoorn's
17th-century crafts of clog making, net mending, basket weaving, and many others
come to life while groups of folk dancers perform with musical ensembles. If you
are not particularly fond of mingling with the crowd, this colorful spectacle may be
viewed from the comfort of the Old Dutch Tavern on Rode Steen Square.
