Amsterdam's old “inner city” is famous for its compactness. Most museums,
markets, monuments, shopping streets, and other attractions are all within walking
distance—or a short tram ride—from your hotel. Several of the city-center shops
are open on Sunday—somewhat unusual when compared to the shopping hours
for the rest of Europe. Amsterdam boasts the largest historical inner city in Europe,
with more than 6,800 National Trust buildings.
