In-Depth Information
please. Fare: €13.00 for one adult and up to two children. For a more detailed
tour, we suggest the guided city walking tour, which includes a visit inside the
Palastaula (Roman Imperial Throne Room). Tours in English depart Saturday at
1330 May-October. For more tour information, including summer boat trips down
the Moselle, visit the tourist office.
The tourist office also offers the Trier Card (adult €9.90; family €21.00) valid for
three consecutive days. The card provides free transport on city buses, free ad-
mission to museums (except during special exhibitions), fee reductions for Trier's
Roman monuments, city walking tours (in English), and bus tours.
Not all of Trier's attributes are readily visible, for beneath the city in the storage
cellars of its wineries there are vats and casks capable of holding more than three
million gallons of the Moselle, Saar, and Ruwer wines produced annually in the
area surrounding the city. If you would like to enjoy a gourmet meal with a glass of
the grape, settle into the Dorint Hotel or the Pfeffermühle restaurants, or taste
the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region wines and sparking wines at the Mediterranean-style
eatery Haus des Weines. Wine tasting is also offered at the area's five wineries
and at the vintners in Olewig.
Trier is abundant in festivals throughout the year. Celebrations include the
Olewig Wine Festival, Trier Sparkling Wine Gala, Wine & Gourmet Festival in
spring, and the Wine Forum, plus the Trier Summer Festival, Music Festival, and
Christmas Market. Schedules are available from the tourist information office.
A small street to the side of the great cathedral in Trier is named Sieh um Dich
(Look Around You)—an expression that depicts the city's greatness, for you can
see 2,000 years of history in just about as many steps.
