In-Depth Information
Luxembourg Central Station is actually located in what historians call the “new
city.” From 1855 to 1866, when the first rails were laid, the gorge of the Alzette
River remained too wide to be bridged. Consequently, the rail station was estab-
lished on the far side of the gorge opposite the city as it existed then, and the new
section of the city began to develop around it.
The station has three platforms ( quais ) serving five tracks. Track 1 is served by
Platform 1, which is directly connected to the station with level access to the plat-
form. Trains arriving on the other tracks, however, require passengers to use an
underground tunnel to reach the main station hall.
A system of elevators serves the outer train platforms. To access them, take the
hallway off to the right of the main hall until you arrive at the entrance to the el-
evator service tunnel, just beyond the last ticket window and before reaching the
baggage room.
The entrances to the elevators serving the train platforms are marked clearly,
although it seems a bit confusing when you first use them. You descend from the
train platform to a tunnel. There, you walk a short distance to another elevator,
which you ascend to the station level; you then take another short tunnel into the
main hallway.
Train information is to your immediate left when exiting from the train platform
area. Hours: 0600-2145 daily. Tel: 24 89 24 89.
Train seat reservations for EuroCity, InterCity, and regular express trains can
be made in the train information office. Sleeper reservations and rail pass valid-
ation may also be made here.
