You can't avoid hearing Naples. The musical style of Bel Canto is exclusively
that of the Neapolitans. Santa Lucia , Funiculi-Funicula , and O Sole Mio ! are but
part of the repertory you will hear being played by hurdy-gurdies, all of it mixed in
with the constant background noise of the crowded streets. Dray animals such as
mules wear bells so that their presence can be acknowledged in the crowd.
You will find the NapoliCentrale station in the city center and flanked by the two
narrow-gauge railway stations serving the Circumvesuviana Line from Naples to
Pompeii and Sorrento.
Money exchange, train information, and food services are all housed within the
Napoli Centrale terminal. To the side of the main hall is a train information and re-
servations office. Hours: 0850-2000 daily.
Naples, a city with a population of more than one million, is just large enough
so that unguided sightseeing can become difficult. Several reputable tour operat-
ors provide excellent service, such as the Tourcar Travel Agency, Tel: (081) 552
0429. The American Express Office located at Piazza Municipio 5/6 also provides

leave the Napoli Circumvesuviana railway station for Pompeii and Sorrento. To
reach this station, walk in the direction of the Garibaldi statue in the center of
Piazza Garibaldi. Just before reaching the statue, turn left onto Corso Garibaldi
