In-Depth Information
On the south side of the square, you will see the LoggiadeiLanzi, which picked
up a few other names, such as “Loggia dei Priori” and “Loggia della Signoria,”
since it was built in 1376. Statuary such as Hercules and the Centaur (1599)
and Rape of the Sabine Women (1583), both by Giambologna, surround Cellini's
Perseus (1545).
The Galleria degli Uffizi (Office Gallery) is, in fact, a converted office containing
the priceless works of art acquired by the Medici family. Located on the right flank
of Palazzo della Signoria, it has 45 exhibit rooms. Its vast collection includes the
ancient sculpture Medici Venus from 300 B.C. , Botticelli's Primavera and Birth of
Venus , Leonardo da Vinci's Adoration of the Magi , and Michelangelo's Holy Fam-
ily , plus an entire roomful of Rembrandts. Hours: 0815-1850 Tuesday-Sunday, ad-
mission €9.50. Visit www.uffizi.com .
This concludes your “quick” tour of the world-famous “City of Art, Florence,” and
it's time to taxi back to the rail station for the train back to Rome—unless, of course,
you have succumbed to Florence's charms. It's a difficult decision to make. If you
are still ambulatory, the walk back to the station will take about 20 minutes.
