In-Depth Information
with the Anzio tourist office and obtain the details on the bus service running
between Anzio and Nettuno.
Places to visit in Anzio are, of course, the beach area and the harbor, where the
Allied forces landed. The beach is now lined with cabanas, and the sand is excel-
lent and the surf usually moderate. Be certain to visit the beachhead museum on
Via di Villa Adele near the rail station.
The harbor holds many interesting places to investigate. Watercraft of all types
are moored there, and the waterfront is lined with seafood restaurants to which
fishermen sell their catch right from the dock. Deciding where to have lunch can
be difficult—they all look inviting. On the street side of the harbor you will find a
number of smart shops with eye-catching selections of nautical clothing.
Aside from the beach and the port area, places of particular interest are Nero's
Grottoes, those ancient warehouses of the port located at the northern end of the
Riviera Mallozzi. Beyond Anzio's western harbor wall lie the remains and mosaics
of Nero's villa, which runs from the beach up to the level of Via Fanciulla d'Anzio.
It's an impressive sight.
At the foot of the Innocenziano wharf in Anzio, you can examine the remains
of an 18th-century fort, and from the wharf itself, there is a view of the gulf with the
Astura Tower and Circeo visible in the distance. The monument commemorating
the Allied landings in 1944 is situated nearby on the western shore.
Nettuno, a seaside town of Saracen origins, is less than 3 miles distant. The
American Military Cemetery is located there. The two British cemeteries are in An-
zio. En route to Nettuno, you'll pass the Villa Colonna on the right and the Villa
Borghese, with its magnificent gardens, on the left.
Anzio's involvement with the sea is reflected in its festivals. One such festival,
the “Festa del Mare” (Feast of the Sea), is held in June in honor of Saint Antony of
Padua, patron saint of the town.
