In-Depth Information
Rome has two airports, but because Ciampino Airport is small and deals mainly
with charter flights, we focus on the main airport, Leonardo da Vinci, also called Fi-
umicino. Fiumicino Airport is 22 miles southwest of Rome. Tel: (06) 65951; Flight
info: (06) 65951; www.adr.it .
Airport-City Links: Leonardo Express direct train service every 30 minutes
from Fiumicino Airport to Rome's Stazione Termini (Central Station) in Rome
runs 0540 to 2340. Journey time: 31 minutes. Fare: €14. It leaves and arrives at
track No. 22 in Roma Termini Station.
There is also an underground train service, FM1, from Fiumicino Airport to
Tiburtina Station (total travel time, 46 minutes), with stops at local stations
Trastevere and Ostiense. Trains run every 15 minutes 0505 to 2233, then half
hourly until 2326; journey time, 42 minutes. Fare: €8.00. If you arrive at night,
there is night bus service between Fiumicino Airport and Tiburtina Station.

A taxi from Fiumicino Airport to the center runs about €40-€50, but we cau-
tion against using taxis unless your airline representative arranges it and de-
termines the fare beforehand. Authorized taxis are white cars with meters.
Arriving by Train
When you arrive at the railway station in Rome, beware of the many willing “help-
ers” eager to carry your luggage and find you a cab. If you need a taxi, carry your
own bag and get in the regular taxi line.
RomaTermini. Rome has several suburban stations, but the InterCity and express
trains stop only in the main station—Roma Termini, which has undergone extens-
ive renovation. It is like a city within a city. New signage is in both Italian and
English. In its main concourse, the section separating the train platforms from
the main hall, you will find a bar and restaurant. On the lower level of the sta-
tion you will find services you normally associate only with the most modern air-
ports—barbershops, hairdressers, showers, lounges, bookstore, drugstore, fast
food, and clothing shops.
Money exchange facilities are located throughout the railway station. In the
main concourse, there is an office just to the left of binari (track) 12, between
gateways 2 and 3. Hours: 0630-2200 daily.
