Be sure to obtain full details regarding the canal transportation system. Water
taxis are expensive, with fares starting at €14.00, plus €0.26 for each additional 15
seconds. The public boats ( vaporetto , motoscafo , or motonave ) operated by ACTV
are a far more affordable means of reaching the main parts of Venice. The most
romantic way to traverse the canals is, of course, via Venice's famous gondolas.
Fares run €80 for about 40 minutes. For only €0.50, you could use one of the
seven traghetti (ferries) to get from one side of the Grand Canal to the other. Also,
ask for a map of Venice. You'll need it. Venetian addresses are somewhat peculiar
in that they consist of a number and the name of a small area that could include
several streets, thus making a particular restaurant or shop difficult to find. The
canal navigation services ( Linee di Navigazione Lagunare ) are described in full de-
tail on the reverse side of the map. If in Venice on a day excursion, purchase a
one-way rather than a round-trip water-bus ticket from the rail station to SanMarco
on Line 1 and return to the station on foot.
