Genoa is proud of its Lanterna, the lighthouse that has become the international
symbol of the city. Built on the site of an ancient tower in the first half of the 16th
century, it has guided mariners to its safe harbor for more than four centuries.
In the time of Christopher Columbus, another son of Genoa, Andrea Doria
(1468-1560), did much to promote the development of the city's maritime power.
Serving as captain-general of Genoa's navy until defeated by Spanish forces in
1522, he served the French briefly before restoring the republic of Genoa as an
ally of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. Andrea Doria's palace can be seen during
the city tour.
Those traveling with children will not want to skip La Citta dei Bambini. This
children's town is fascinating to young ones and to the curious of any age who
want to learn how scientific things work.
