In-Depth Information
what language is spoken at the windows. The British flag means English is
spoken. Hours: 0700-2300.
Train reservations for Eurostar Italia, EuroCity, InterCity, and Rapido express-
train services are made in an office separate from the one dispensing train in-
formation. To reach it, go through the main station hall and descend to the sta-
tion foyer on the street level. Turn left and look for a huge door marked
BIGLIETTERIA EST (ticket office east). Go through the door, and take a number
from the ticket machine to wait your turn. You will see counter Nos. 49 to 53,
labeled PRENOTAZIONI (Reservations). Hours: 0550-2220 daily.
Rail pass validation requires that you descend to street level via the escalator
in the middle of the station, make a right turn, and look for a sign, BIGLIETTERIA
OVEST. Then proceed to window 20 or 22, marked INTERNATIONAL TICKETS.
Food services range from trackside vendors to a full-service restaurant. The
restaurant, with a large and efficient self-service cafeteria next to it, is located
on the far left side of the main hall as you exit from the trains. A snack bar is
also there. Downstairs near the BIGLIETTERIA OVEST sign you will find an excellent
cafeteria that serves traditional Italian hot entrees and sandwiches. Just behind
the cafeteria is a supermarket.
In this snack bar, as in the various smaller ones scattered throughout the
main hall and track area, you need to purchase tickets for the particular food or
beverage you desire from a cashier, then give the tickets to a counter attend-
ant. The system works, but now you know how confused the Italian immigrant
felt when ordering an American hamburger, especially if asked, “Would you like
that with mustard, catsup, lettuce, tomato, pickles—and was that to go?”
If this is your first rail trip into Italy, this will probably be your first acquaint-
ance with the trackside vendors. Similar to the pushcarts that grace many of the
streets in New York City, they offer a convenient variety of refreshments—and
the price is right.
Baggage-checking facilities may be reached by taking the exit at the end of
Tracks 6 and 7. Across the main hall and to the right, you'll see a sign in red let-
ters, DEPOSITO BAGAGLI. Rates vary according to what you store. The facility is
open all the time.
The main baggage room, located on the street level of the station, can be
reached either from the plaza facing the Michelangelo Hotel or from the bottom
of the main escalator, between the street level and the train concourse. Hours:
0600-2300 daily.
